  1. A nuclear reactor is a device for producing 
  2. nuclear energy in a controlled manner. There 
  3. are various types of reactor in use, all 
  4. using nuclear fission. In a gas-cooled 
  5. reactor, a circulating gas under pressure 
  6. (such as carbon dioxide) removes heat from 
  7. the core of the reactor, which usually 
  8. contains natural uranium. The efficiency of 
  9. the fission process is increased by slowing 
  10. neutrons in the core by using a moderator 
  11. such as carbon. Public concern over the 
  12. safety of nuclear reactors has been 
  13. intensified by explosions and accidental 
  14. release of radioactive materials.
